BOGUS, Robert
Does anyone have any information on a family that owned a tannery in or around Rome, Ga from approximately 1860 to 1875. My gggg-grandfather was from Rome,Ga. The story handed down through the family is that around 1869-1874 my gggg-grandfather age around 18-19 years was hunting with his younger brother age around 15-17 years and a friend. The friend accidentally shot and killed my gggg's younger brother. My gggg then turned and shot and killed his friend. When my gggg went home and told his mother she was worried that he would be prosecuted and hanged. She gave him the family horse, some food and 4 gold pieces and he escaped into the night and went to the Indian territory around Texas. He lived with the Indians and they accepted him as a brother and he fathered several children with different Indian wives. My gggg grew tired of this life and escaped again into the night and ended up in Hall Summit, LA and took the name of Robert Bogus or Bogues. He fathered several children including my g-grandfather Jerry Bogus.
On my gggg's death bed he would not tell his children his real name. It is believed that it is either Patterson, Venable or Pettyjohn. Please if anyone knows of this story email me.

CANTRELL, Elizabeth Hudson
I'm trying to locate where Elizabeth HUDSON CANTRELL was living when she died and where she was buried. Elizabeth was born in 1820 in SC and she was the wife of Wilson CANTRELL. Wilson is to have died fighting in the Civil War. My first connection of Elizabeth in Floyd County is the 1870 census of Sub 49, Rome, Floyd, GA and the last document I can find is of her still trying to get her widow's pension in May 1906. I have a photo of her in it taken 1904 or 5. Her children were Mary J., Georgia A. (I think she married C.L. JONES 3 Sep 1884), Wilson Taylor, Samantha Eunice (married Franklin Sherrod MATHIS), Waddy Thomas (Lilla DAVIDSON), Sylvester (Margaret J. Unknown), Henry (according to 1880 census was blind) and Edna was listed as Elizabeth's daughter in 1880 but I think she was really her granddaughter. Am happy to share info with anyone researching this line.

DAFFORD, William Green "Billie"
perhaps DeFoor or any variant (he knew that Dafford was not exactly right but was illiterate and couldn't do anything about it) was living with a Terry family in 1870 in Floyd County. He was born between 1850 and 1859 in Illinois or Georgia. When the Asa Chandler Holcomb family left Floyd County in 1871 and went to Clark County, Arkansas, he was with them, although family lore says they were strangers to him. Family lore also says that he was a Civil War orphan. He married Jane Runyan whose family lived about 2 1/2 miles from where the Holcombs settled in Clark, and lived out his life there, dying in 1902. I've been working on him for 17 years and need help!

JONES, Richard E.
We are specifically searching for information on Richard E. (Ebenezer) Jones, who was born in Georgia @ 1830. He was my great-great grandfather. The only information we have was obtained in an interview of my grandfather, George Washington Jones, prior to his death. Granddaddy told us his father was named John Blackstone Jones, and his grandfather was Richard Ebenezer Jones, and his grandmother was Elizabeth Jones. Granddaddy said that all of them were born in Georgia and they later moved to Mississippi. . I've been able to confirm Richard E. Jones and his family on the 1870 census which shows him, age 42, in Floyd County, Cave Springs, Georgia. His wife is Elizabeth, age 33, and his children are Susan V (Virginia), age 7, John B (Blackstone) age 3, and William T age 5 months?, all of whom were born in Georgia. Richard's occupation is listed as "House Carpenter". During the period between the 1870 & 1880 censuses, it appears that Richard and his family moved to Scott County, Mississippi (by way of Tennessee), where they appear on the the 1880 census with a 4th child, Geo. W, who was born in Tennessee. We believe that Richard served with the CSA but we have no verification of his service. I have searched the Mormon family site as well as Rootsweb and Genealogy, and I have posted inquires on message boards but it appears that I've hit the proverbial "brick wall" in my efforts to locate information on Richard Ebenezer; I would be most appreciative if you might have any info in your records which would assist me in my search. I have learned that the given "names" and spellings can vary greatly, and I understand the tradition of naming with family names, but I'm not having much luck with Richard E. or with John "Blackstone". Any information and/or assistance you might provide me would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

MATHIS, William H. I've found my William H. Mathis back to 1840 in Cass County but then by 1850 he and his family are living in Floyd County. Researching Floyd County deed records for the Mathis surname I've found as a Grantor a Richard Mathis for property in FC in 1838, 1853 & 1857; a Sherrod Mathis as a grantor in 1852 and a William Mathis as a grantor in 1852 & 1855. I think that this William is probably the father of my William H. Mathis and that this Sherrod and Richard are either Wm. H.'s siblings or uncles. William H. uses the repeat of names Richard, Sherrod and William in his sons' names. I've found a Sherrod Mathis listed as having 4 slaves in the Floyd County Slave schedule. Anyone that can add info with mine or tell me what direction to go next I'd really appreciate. I'm stuck right here. I think that probably all the Mathis in Floyd County come from these 3 men---William, Sherrod and Richard.

WOOD(S), Andrew Jackson We are looking for any info on Andrew Jackson Woods or Wood. And his brother George Wood. Andrew is my mother's father. George was born in 1870 and Andrew a few years younger. They lived around and in Cave Spring. We are told that they left home in there teens (14 or so). Had a step father who beat them. There mother was holding a child in her arms begging them not to go when they left. They never saw her again. They said the step father was planing on killing them. We were never able to get my grand father to talk about his life. He married my grandmother (Lela Fortenberry) and George married (Rosa Fortenberry) Lela's sister. George said there name was Wood and Andy said there name was Woods. Both are deceased now. My mothers name was Emma Ophelia and my father is Jack Langston from Cave Spring. We have info on the Langston side but nothing on the Woods side. Our Langston is from John Langston the third. My parents are buried in State Line Cemetery in Cave Spring. If any one can remember any thing at all please E-mail me. Maybe some worked with them and told there children or ?? Any thing at all would help. Magnolia (Maggie)Bolinger Langston was my grandmother on the Langston side. She died before I was born. Thank you for your help. Also the mother of the men may have been named Ophelia. Good luck on your search.

YOUNG, Charles Leroy I am seeking information about my great-grandfather and his family. We believe he was born in Rome and that his father was injured during the civil war and died in federal prison. His mother remarried and he left home when he was between 7 and 11 years old. We know he was married to Laura Robinette in Cherokee Mills, GA on January 11, 1880. They moved to Texas, had 7 children, and both died in Amarillo - he in 1936 and she in 1954. We would love to find information about Charles Leroy and his mother, father, and any other family.
